There are so many benefits to starting your baby swimming at a young age. My two favourites are:
- It’s a special opportunity to bond with your baby. We all lead busy lives, and it can be hard to get quality time alone with your baby, without distractions. Swim time, is one of the few times that your baby has your undivided attention.
- Sleep!!! All of that time in the pool makes for a very sleepy baby. We find that after a half an hour of swimming, Oscar will be exhausted and sleep for half the day.
If you are about to embark on your first trip to the pool, or first holiday with your little bundle of joy, then you are probably wondering what flotation device (if any) you should buy.
It is not recommended that you use the traditional seat type floaties before 6 months of age, as your babys neck muscles and head control are not likely to be strong and steady enough.
Our favourite floaty for under 6 months of age is:

Oscar is between 3 and 4 months old here. He was so chilled out, lying on his tummy floating around the pool. The little bells in the floaty were making noises as he cruised along.
The float comes with a little hand pump, but you can easily inflate it by mouth. Make sure you wait a few minutes after inflating, to ensure that no air is leaking out.

We bought the floaty from Amazon.
This is not a lifesaving device, please always stay within arms reach of your baby in the water and don’t take your eyes off them even for a split second.
